When the principles of electric current and magnetic fields interacting can be a bit technical, building a basic engine is easy. We’ve found for the facts on how to build an electric motor, and we’ve got all the answers you need. Start building the dc motor by firstly winding the coil. In the next step, connect the battery, and then introduction of magnet, and you’ll have a simple electric motor in few minutes.

Coil Windings

1. Take four pencils and tape them. Tape the pencils as 2-2 cluster. This will give you something solid to wrap the wire to make a coil around. You can set the pencils as a cylinder that’s about half an inch in diameter.

2. Wrap wire over the pencils. Once you've the pencils taped or got a cylinder, start wrapping the wire over it. Start in the middle of the wire and wrap the coil upto fifteen times toward one end and same times toward the other end. After finishing the wrapping of coil, remove the pencils slowly.

3. The loose ends should be looped around the coil. Wrap the left loose ends around the side of the coil 3-4 times. This will help in keeping the wounded coil tight. You should point the remaining loose ends straight to the coil.

Connection to Battery

1. Secure the battery. By the use of tape/clay hold on the battery on a flat surface. This will allow you to connect it to the coil without having to hold it with your hands. Make sure the battery is laying on its side so that you can easily reach both terminals.

2. Strip the ends of the coil wire. Use wire strippers for removing the insulation on either end of the wire. These leads will be connected to battery and allow current to flow through the coil.

3. Put each end of coil through an eye of a needle. You can use needles, as the perfect holders for your wounded coil. You should pass out the both ends of the coil through the eyes of the needles.

4. Tape the needles to the battery terminals. After the flow of current started through the coil, then you will need to tape the sharp ends of the needle to the battery.

  • Be careful while taping the sharp ends
  • Don't let the ends of needle to come in touch with each other.

Introduction of the Magnet

1. Bring a magnet close to the coil. When the flow of current from the coil started then you will introduce a magnet near to the coil or tape the magnet near the coil. The closer you will bring the magnet the greater will be the spinning speed of coil increase.

2. Spin the coil. Look out what happens when you spin the coil. The spinning direction of the coil depends on the direction of flow of current through the coil.
